VALERIE "THE WOLFE" MAHFOOD

"Valerie started the academy for Correctional Officers directly from High School. She was the youngest to ever be admitted and of 300 applications, one of only two women selected.  Upon graduation, she received her unit of assignment. She had been assigned to a maximum security, all male institution. It was destined to be the roughest prison the state of Texas had ever built. Her family who were concerned, tried to urge her to quit, go to college, but being of a slightly stubborn nature----she refused."  Momma Wolfe, full story

Valerie "The Wolfe" Mahfood began the chain of events of becoming a boxer in 1995,  when she had seen a commercial for a tough women contest.  She spoke to one of her co-workers who's sons were at a local gym, and he said that he would talk to the trainers.  About a week later...she was in the gym! She met trainers Harry Murdock and Austin Green. After Mahfood observed the people in the gym working out----she knew in her heart that she would love boxing.

By 1996, Mahfood had entered an amateur bout in Beaumont, Texas, and also fought in some local tough woman show.  About six months later, she went to Detroit, Michigan for a National Tough Women's competition.  She won one fight, but lost one also.

Highlights of her pro boxing career:

July 28, 1997, New Orleans, Mahfood KO'd  Jeanne Martinez of Slidell, Louisiana in the first round.

April 2, 1998, Houston, Texas, Mahfood defeated Brenda Cooper in a 4-round decision.

June 24, 1998, Boomtown Riverboat Casino, Harvey, Louisiana, she defeated Thistle Colleps, 4th round TKO.

July 19, 1998,Civic Center, Lake Charles, Louisiana, Mahfood lost to Mitzi Jeter in a 6-round unanimous decision.

December 2, 1998,New Orleans, Louisiana, Mahfood was KO'd by Kendra Lenhart, of Lenoir City, Tennessee.

May 8, 1999, Philadelphia, Mississippi, Valerie defeated Jeneva Buckhalter, TKO third round.

May 27, 1999, Gold Strike Casino, Tunica, Mississippi, Valerie lost to Kathy Rivers in a very hard fight that resulted in a six-round unanimous defeat for Mahfood.

July 15, 1999,Houston, Texas, Mahfood defeated Brenda Cooper in a rematch with a unanimous decision.

September 17, 1999, Panama City, Panama, Mahfood won the WIBF and IWBF Light-Heavyweight world titles!  Sandy Goldberg, a photographer for WBAN covered the fight exclusively and she called TL Fox the night of the fight, shortly after it was over.  Goldberg said that the fight between Rivers and Mahfood was very exciting.  That Mahfood fought hard and that the fight was stopped in the 10th round to a disappointed Kathy Rivers.

November 18, 1999, Radisson Astrodome, Houston, Texas, Mahfood defeated Jeneva Buckhalter in a four-round Unanimous decision. This was a rematch.   Her record is now 7-3-0.  Mahfood team contacted WBAN and sent these photos of that bout!

On April 20, 2000, Mahfood TKO'd Monica McGowan 1:47 in the third round. Mahfood's record moved to 8-3, and McGowan is now 1-1-0. Originally, the fight between #7 ranked (I. F. B. A. Super Heavy Weight) Monica McGowen and I.W.B.F./W.I.B.F. Lt. Heavy Weight World Champion Valerie "Wolfe" Mahfood was slotted as an undercard fight on the Miller Lite Productions: "Texas Title Belt" fight card. The main event was an eight round, men's light weight Texas Title belt fight. However, as things progressed and the media coverage continued to focus on the women's bout, the Wolfe vs. McGowen fight advanced to the main event, leaving the men's title fight as the "featured" undercard bout. Meeting in the center of the ring, both fighters touched gloves as they received instructed from the referee, Ricky Webb. The night before, each had weighed in within two pounds of one another. McGowen was the heavier of the two at 182, with Mahfood tipping in at a 180 pounds. The opening bell sounded. Both boxers met in the center of the ring.   Although McGowen has relatively little ring experience, she did not demonstrate it against Mahfood. Throwing a stiff jab dead on target, she earned Mahfood's respect. As well, the Wolfe established herself with her trademark jab/left hook combination to the head. At the end of the first round, neither fighter appeared injured. The first round seemed to be a learning session in which they came to see each other's strengths and ultimately, their weaknesses. In the second round, the action picked up tremendously as Mahfood was fueled by chants of "Wolfe" from the crowd. Monica, a strong counter puncher, would slip the jab of Mahfood in exchange for one of her own. After several attempts at engaging McGowen, Mahfood dropped the left jab and begin to lead with a straight right. The action was non stop as both fighters threw in combinations of at least fours. However, with thirty seconds to go in the second round, the Wolfe took the led. Leading with a left hook to the body, she cause McGowen to drop her hands. Then, she fired a straight right that shattered Monica's nose. A few more punches and the round was over. The third round begin what was yet to be another two minutes of war. Again they met in the center of the ring, took hold of the canvas beneath them, and made way for battle amidst a now standing crowd. McGowen was beginning to show a little fatigue, which allowed the Wolfe to capitalize on her strength: stamina. Never stopping to set her feet, Wolfe repeatingly threw jabs aimed for the now blood strained face of McGowen. This tactic, though effective, left Mahfood vulnerable to the strong right hand of McGowen.  While attempting to throw an unanchored jab, the Wolfe was caught by a vicious right hand. Losing her balance, she stumbled backward. Monica charged forward to catch her, but Mahfood had since pivoted to her right and was able to counter with another straight right hand to McGowen's jaw. Monica was now defenseless. Wolfe unloaded twenty-six unanswered punches before the referee attempted to stop the action. Simultaneously, McGowen's corner threw in the towel to end the assault with 57 seconds to go in the third round.

On August 10, 2000 Houston, Texas, Astro Arena, Middle Lite Series:  Valerie"Wolfe" Manhood defeated Mary Ann Almager with a TKO in the fifth round and retained her IWBF Super-Middleweight belt!
