Christy Martin vs.
Daniella Somers -
Martin Won by TKO fifth Round!
| Christy
Martin earned a reported $100,000 by stopping Daniella Somers in
the fifth round of their scheduled 10-round fight. According to fight
sources, Martin (38-2-2) dominated the fight from the opening bell,
controlling the fight with big right hands. Referee Kenny Bayles finally
stopped the fight after one of those big right hands turned Somers around
and left her hanging on the ropes at 1:37 of the fifth round. "I
can't believe it was this easy," Martin said. "I knew I had her
from the very first punch I threw." Martin, of Orlando, Fla., weighed
140 to 138 1/2 for Somers, of Belgium. Somers fell to 9-3. On a
prefight interview, Martin spoke about her fight with Sumya Anani.
She said that Anani came in to have a street brawl last Dec. 1998, and
that she knew she would not win. Martin said that Anani had
headbutted her, damaging her eye in the first round. |

BACKGROUND OF
CHRISTY MARTIN |
|
If not for a college dare,
Christy Martin might never have even thought of entering the sport
of womens boxing. Martin said, "I did it on a dare,"
about her first fight. She said, "A tough woman contest was
held where I was going to school (Concord College in Athens, West
Virginia), and a friend of mine dared me to enter. I didn't want to,
but the winner was going to get $1,000, so I did, and I was
fortunate enough to win."
That was how it all began in 1989. Martin
turned professional, putting a hold on the degree she had earned in
education. No one, including her family would have thought that
Martin would accomplish what she has done in this sport.
Her story is not much different from many of
the women who dare get into this sport. When she decided to
join a gym where her husband was a trainer, Jim Martin, he like many
other male trainers just did not want women in the gym. He
even went as far to put someone in the ring to take care of her, but
then was surprised to see Martin hold her own. Jim and Christy
eventually got married and now live in Florida.
In 1993, Martin signed with Don King.
Unlike the past women boxers who could not get Don
King's attention.
