Belinda "Brown Sugar"
Laracuente,
in her early 20's, 5' 5", and 140 lbs, is originally from Puerto
Rico. She moved to moved to Miami Florida in May 1998 to pursue her
dream ---to win a world title belt.
Belinda trains at the New River boxing gym, and is managed by Julio
Martinez. She is considered one of the most promising up and coming
boxers of today.
She began her boxing career by taking on Karen Nye, a Philadelphia
fighter. She defeated Nye in her pro debut.
She also fought long time veteran boxer Cora
Webber who proved to be a little too much for her early
career. Since then she has been non-stop with not only
fighting anyone, but establishing a solid record and recognition.
Highlights of Laracuente's career:
May
12, 2000 Belinda lost to Karla Redo by a UD
six-round decision in the welterweight division.
March
3, 2000 - Laracuente fought Christy Martin and lost to a majority
decision. A poll has been conducted on WBAN and so far, 99.7 of all
fans felt that Laracuente won the fight easily. When the poll has
been completed, all comments will be sent to the Nevada Boxing
Commission.
August 14, 1999 - Laracuente fought Zulfia
Koutdoussova, and lost to a split decision, but it was a
controversial loss and the bout was an action-packed 10-rounder
lightweight title bout. The fight took place in Miami, Florida
and was called the Black-Tie Event. Sandy
Goldberg covered the fight exclusively for WBAN, check
out the photo gallery.
May
28, 1999 Laracuente (137 lbs) fought Mitzi
Jeter (140) in Puerto Rico and won by a unanimous decision in an
eight-rounder.
March
26, 1999, Laracuente defeated Glenda Watkins in Hialeah,
Florida in a lightweight six-round bout. She won by a unanimous
decision.
February
26, 1999, she defeated Shakurah Witherspoon with a eight-round
unanimous decision in a lightweight match.
February
5, 1999, Laracuente shocked boxing fans when she defeated champion
Daniella Somers in Miami, Florida in a lightweight (137lb range)
eight-round unanimous decision. Somers took a lot of hard punches in
this fight and looked bewildered at times fighting the very young and
skillful Laracuente.
December
3, 1998, Laracuente lost to Denise Moraetes
in Bay St. Louis, MS in a Unanimous four-round decision. One
observer sent this into WBAN about that fight, "I
read someone's comment about Laracuente's loss to Moraetes. The only
reason why Laracuente lost that fight is because she got arrested the
night before for gambling in the casino (she's only 20, not old enough to
gamble), and as a result, she spent the night in jail, and she did not get
the proper rest, nutrition, or mental pre-fight preparation before that
fight, which is why she lost, and understandably so. If she hadn't have
gotten locked up, she would've whooped Moraetes."
October
17, 1998 Laracuente fought the infamous phoney baloney Tawayna
Broxton, the fighter that was managed by Mr. Kemp. WBAN does
not consider ANY fights with this person a bout, and many fighters (top
fighters) have been matched up with Broxton. Laracuente had a
unanimous decision with Broxton in a six-round bout.
October
10, 1999, Laracuente had a draw with Jeanne Martinez in a
four-rounder. The fight took place in New Orleans in lightweight
division.
September
12, 1999, Laracuente fought and defeated Gail Grandchamp, with a first
round TKO in a lightweight match. Grandchamp is a fighter that helped
women's boxing when she pursued a lawsuit that lasted seven years to earn
the right to fight in amateurs. Gailchamp sued in North Adams,
Massachusetts: A state Superior Court judge ruled that a woman boxer, Gail Grandchamp was
illegally barred from the ring, because of her sex. The ruling came nearly eight years
after Gail Grandchamp first sought an amateur license. The decision coming much later in
years, could not help Grandchamp personally, because she was then 36 years old, pass the
maximum age limit for amateur fighters. Grandchamp, a great advocate for womens
boxing said that she hoped the decision would not be able to see womens boxing
evolve.
April
3, 1998 Laracuente defeated Sharon Tiller in a lightweight bout that
resulted in a TKO in the first round. The fight occurred in Bayomon,
Puerto Rico.
February
13, 1998, she fought in the (132-134) weight class and defeated
Shannise Davis with a TKO in the first round.
October
24, 1997 in Miami, Florida Laracuente again fought NO FIGHTER/Tawayna
Broxton in a featherweight bout. The result was a unanimous
decision.
